IEC 62259 pdf download – Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Nickel-cadmium prismatic secondary single cells with partial gas recombination
1 scope
This International Standard specifies marking,designation,dimensions,tests and require-ments for vented nickel-cadmium prismatic secondary single cells where special provisionshave been made in order to have partial or, under very specific conditions,full gasrecombination.
NOTEln this context, “prismatic” refers to cells having rectangular sides and base.
When there exists an lEC standard specifying test conditions and requirements for cells usedin special applications and which is in conflict with this standard,the former shall takeprecedence.

3Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions contained in lEC 60050-486 andthe following apply.
3.1
vented cell
a secondary cell having a cover provided with an opening through which gaseous productsmay escape
NOTE The opening may be fitted with a venting system, which may include an overpressure vent.3.2
nominal voltage
the nominal voltage of a vented nickel-cadmium rechargeable single cell with partial gasrecombination is 1,2 v
3.3
rated capacity
quantity of electricity CzAh (ampere hours), declared by the manufacturer, which a single cellcan deliver during a 5 h period when charged,stored and discharged under the conditionsspecified in clause 7.2.1
3.4
partial gas recombination
ability of a cell to recombine most of the gases evolved during charging under the conditionsspecified in 7.9
4Parameter measurement tolerances
The overall accuracy of controlled or measured values,relative to the specified or actualvalues, shall be within these tolerances:
a) ±1 % . for voltage;
b) ±1 %for current;
c) ±2°℃for temperature;
d) ±0,1 %for time;
e) ±1 % for capacity;
f) ±5 %for gas volume.
These tolerances comprise the combined accuracy of the measuring instruments,themeasurement techniques used and all other sources of error in the test procedure.
For assistance in selecting instrumentation,see lEC 60051 for analogue instruments andlEC 60485 for digital instruments. The details of the instrumentation used shall be provided inany report of results.
5 Designation and marking
5.1 Cell designation
Vented nickel-cadmium prismatic secondary cells with partial gas recombination shall be designated by the letter K which signifies cadmium, followed by the letter G which signifies partial gas recombination, and followed by a letter L, M, H or X which signifies:
• low rate of discharge (L);
• medium rate of discharge (M);
• high rate of discharge (H);
• very high rate of discharge (X ).
NOTE These types of cells are typically but not exclusively used for the following discharge rates:
• L up to 0,5 I t A,
• M up to 3,5 I t A,
• H up to 7 I t A,
• X up to and above 7 I t A.
This group of three letters shall be followed by a group of figures indicative of the rated capacity of the cell in ampere-hours. Cells that have been tested at 20 °C and 5 °C but not at –1 8 °C shall carry an additional marking of T5.
For example: KGH 1 85 or KGH 1 85 T5.
Cells in cases of plastic material shall be designated by the letter “P” after the figures.
For example: KGH 1 85 P or KGH 1 85 P T5.
5.2 Cell termination
This standard does not specify cell termination.
